Emergency Plan
Emergency exits

Emergency exits are kept clear and free from obstacles that could hinder a quick exit and we practice our planned escape routes with the children.  The doors downstairs are locked to prevent the children in our care wandering outside or from someone unauthorised entering the premises.  The key to unlock each door is situated on a hook above the door so it can be quickly opened in the event of an emergency.  All large windows are locked too and again keys are attached to each windowsill so if we are not able to exit using a door the windows can be quickly opened.

In the event of discovering a fire

If the smoke alarms did not activate, we and any older children present would shout ‘Fire, Fire’ as practiced.  We would close the door to the room to contain the fire and gather the children together and take them out of the nearest safe exit and wait outside or with a neighbour a safe distance away until it was safe to return.

Smoke alarms are checked first monthly and you will see confirmation of this in the attendance book which you sign weekly.  We carry out full fire drills every 6 months with the children and new children are told the procedures when they join.

In the event of an accident or emergency

All accidents and significant incidents are recorded in the ‘NCMA Accident, Incident and Medication Record Book’ and you will be asked to sign it should anything need to be recorded.  A fully stocked Ofsted approved first aid kit is kept in the kitchen and we carry smaller kits in the car and in change bags when we are out and about.

We will do our best at all times to make sure the children in our care remain safe, reassured and calm in the event of an emergency.  We will obtain your written permission to seek emergency medical treatment and we are both trained in emergency paediatric first aid so can take forward any necessary first aid, ringing the emergency services for assistance if required.  If we have to accompany or take a child to hospital one of us will stay at home with the other children in our care until normal collection times.  In the event of your child being taken to hospital we would wait with them until you or your emergency contact arrived.

Contacting you

We would contact you as soon as it was safe to do so.  We keep details of your child’s doctor on our mobile phones in addition to your and your emergency contact details too so if we are out and about we have all the numbers we need.  In an extreme emergency you may be contacted by us or our emergency back up person and would be expected to collect your child straight away.  We are each others emergency back up and in the unlikely event that we are both needed at hospital then your child would remain in our home with either Jacqui or Robert’s parents until you or your emergency contact were able to collect them.
